About Us - Respite Care

Many  people with learning disabilities live in the family home and depend on their families for care and support. Whilst family members continually provide care and support, it is widely accepted that this can be demanding and often stressful, putting family members and carers under a significant strain. 'Respite' refers to short term, temporary care provided to the service user in order that the family or main carer can take a break from the daily role of supporting and care giving. The opportunity of respite care away from the family home can be positive for both the carer and those needing cared for, and most importantly, often significantly contributes to the long-term success of the family placement.

Fairways Independent Living Initiative provides a respite facility at Duncreggan Residential Home. Each individual client receives care and support tailored to their individual needs and wishes.

Respite stays can be long or short term according to need and a full programme of activities will be implemented to ensure vital stimulation and development. Sonia, (Home Manager) and her team, will work to coordinate a plan of care, centred around the client, in partnership with the family/carer and the appropriate social work department to ensure quality and continuity of care.

Duncreggan may have single or twin rooms depending on availability and all three floors are serviced by a lift. The entire building is fitted with a 'staff call' system to ensure the comfort and safety of each resident. The Home is fully staffed twenty four hours a day, with there being two wakened night staff on duty between the hours of 10:00pm and 8:00am. All food is prepared and cooked in the Home to the highest standard. Our cooks, Stephanie and Barbara have worked in Duncreggan for many years and are well experienced in the nutrional needs of people with learning disabilities. The range of choice is extensive and options for those with particular nutirional requirements are also made available.

Portrush, with its many amenities is a prime location for a short break and there is always a full programme of activities at Duncreggan, ranging from bus trips to pub outings and meals out. We like to keep the trips plentiful but with small numbers attending each. This promotes more individual support and much more accesibility to choice, with each service user being able to choose the more appropriate trips according to his/her desires and abilities.

If you would like to enquire about the availability for our respite scheme, please drop us an email.
